Do you really need a car GPS tracker?

Types of car GPS trackers available in India
1. Hardwired GPS trackers
Installed by a technician, connected to the car battery, ignition line and often to the fuel pump for remote engine cut. Best accuracy, best features. This is our default for personal cars.
2. OBD plug and play trackers
Plugged into the OBD II port under the dashboard. No installation cost, easy to move between cars. Downsides, easy to spot and unplug, and OBD trackers on some Indian cars keep the ECU awake and slowly drain the battery.
3. Wireless magnetic trackers
Battery operated, magnetic base. Great as a hidden backup tracker inside the boot or under the chassis. Not meant to be the primary tracker on a daily car.

Best hiding spots in a car

Never install near the airbag wiring. Never place in the boot lid where the GPS antenna sees only metal.
SIM plan and long term running cost

AIS 140 for taxi, school van and rental cars
If you run a commercial vehicle in India, you need an AIS 140 certified tracker, not a personal grade device. AIS 140 includes panic button, driver ID, and reporting to the state VLTD backend. For personal cars this is not required.

Does a car GPS tracker work in basements and tunnels?
GPS signal is blocked by concrete slabs. Trackers use the last known GPS point and cell tower positioning as fallback, so location remains close but not exact until the car exits.
Can I install a GPS tracker myself?
OBD trackers, yes, plug and play. Hardwired trackers should be installed by a technician to avoid affecting airbag and ECU wiring.
Will the tracker void my car warranty?
A tracker installed on the accessory line, without cutting factory harnesses, does not void the warranty. Cutting into the fuel pump or ECU circuit for engine cut can, so ask the installer for a non invasive install.
Can police track my stolen car using the GPS?
You share the live location and history from the app with the police, and they act on that. Some state cyber cells accept a screenshot along with the FIR. Recovery success is much higher within the first 6 hours.
How long does the tracker keep working if my car battery is disconnected?
