Types of fuel level sensors
Capacitive fuel sensors
Industry standard for trucks. Accurate to about 0.5 percent. Long life, no moving parts. Requires cutting a small hole on top of the tank and calibration for each tank shape. This is what we recommend for serious fleets.
Ultrasonic sensors
Mounted at the bottom of the tank without cutting. Easier install, less accurate, more affected by tank slosh and temperature.
OEM float sender + CAN bus
Reads the vehicle own dashboard fuel level over CAN bus. Zero install, but limited to the low resolution of the OEM float. Works well as a second signal.
How the system detects theft
Every fuel drop of a few litres in a short time is compared with speed, ignition status and location. Rules like drop while stationary with engine off, or drop at a location that is not a fuel station, fire an alert instantly with a screenshot of the graph and map.
Calibration, the step everyone underestimates
A tank is not a linear shape. To convert sensor reading to litres, you fill the tank in fixed steps and record the sensor value, then upload the table. Skipping calibration means the software reports garbage. Serious installers spend 2 hours per truck on this alone.
